Salary increases: gross pay vs take-home pay

A percentage increase is simple to calculate on gross salary, but the change in take-home pay depends on deductions and tax.

Calculate the gross increase first

Multiply current gross monthly salary by the percentage increase to find the monthly change. The new gross amount is the old gross amount plus that increase.

Why net pay can change differently

PAYE, UIF and other payroll deductions can change as remuneration changes. Two people receiving the same percentage increase can therefore see different changes in take-home pay.

Tax-year context matters

South African payroll calculations depend on the applicable tax year and the broader remuneration and deduction profile. A gross-salary calculator is not a payroll tax determination.
